Do you have a trip coming up and your dog or cat is coming with you? We love it when families travel together! But to ensure the trip is smooth and seamless, there are some important procedures you should know about. At Pet Point, we can help you prepare everything, ensuring your pet's physical and emotional well-being. 🐾
What do I need to travel with my pet?
The requirements depend on the destination, but in general, you'll need:
🌍 International Health Certificate
This document includes:
Vaccination verification (mainly rabies)
Internal and external deworming
Complete physical exam
Microchip required for certain countries
We can guide you through the specific forms required by each country (for example, the US, Canada, EU, or Japan).
💉 ISO 11784/11785 Microchip
Some countries require this as part of their entry protocol. If your pet doesn't have one yet, we can place it here at the clinic without any pain or complications.
📄 Screwworm-free certificate: required for travel to the United States
If your pet is leaving Mexico for the United States, it is mandatory to present a health certificate stating that it is free of the New World screwworm.
This applies even if:
Your final destination is not the United States, but you have a stopover there.
Your pet is traveling as a companion, in the cabin, or checked in.
This certificate must be issued by a SENASICA-authorized doctor, such as the Pet Point team, and is valid for a maximum of 5 calendar days from the date of issuance.
🐾 How to prepare for the procedure?
To ensure we can help you with time and peace of mind, follow these steps:
Schedule your appointment at least 7–10 days before your trip. This way, we guarantee availability 2 or 3 days before your flight, which is when the certificate must be issued.
You will receive a digital form from our team on the same day you schedule your appointment. This form allows us to learn more about your pet, their history, vaccinations, and destination. It must be completed and submitted immediately so we can review any additional needs (vaccination, deworming, microchip, etc.).
🧳 Tips for a Fear-Free Trip
Because it's not just about meeting requirements: we also want them to travel without anxiety. Here are our Fear-Free recommendations:
👜 Family carrier: Leave it at home several days beforehand so your pet can explore it at their own pace.
🍖 Treats, blankets, and familiar smells: They help create a sense of security during the trip.
⏰ Avoid excessive fasting: Many airlines require it, but don't let them go more than 6-8 hours without food.
💊 Pre-consultation if anxiety is present: We can help you with nutraceuticals, pheromones, or safe medications.
🧼 Pre-travel bath or cleaning: especially if you're returning to the country. You can take advantage of medicated baths or regular baths.
💚 We're with your family every step of the way
We know that every trip is special, and we want it to start off on the right foot. If you're planning to leave the country with your pet, schedule your appointment ahead of time and let us help you with everything you need for their certification.
